Edd chose ECTC because he believes that it, “has the best telecommunications program and instructors.”  Edd also stated, “SkillsUSA was one of the most rewarding experiences I have ever had. Edd lives with his wife and three children in Fitzgerald.

Instructor Lee Renfroe states, “After Edd’s name was called as the winner of the gold medal, I realized this is why I became an instructor, to help others succeed.  Edd’s hard work and dedication is the reason he won.  He has a great future ahead of him.”

Instructor Donald During said, “Edd was a pleasure to work with in preparing for the SkillsUSA competition.  He had already completed all the necessary hands-on skills in his daily classes that were essential in his competition.  Edd does very well on all telecommunication tasks given to him and completes the tasks in a timely manner.  I knew he would be a winner.”

Kelli Hefton
Gwinnett Technical College
Pre-School Teaching Assistant
National SkillsUSA - Gold Medal Winner

After a long journey of unexpected twists and turns in her life, Kelli Hefton, a 43-year-old resident from Sugar Hill, found herself sitting in the registrar’s office getting ready to embark on a new adventure at Gwinnett Tech as a student.

“It was time to take control of my future as well as to be a good role model for my children, although I was admittedly nervous going back to school after such a long time,” says Hefton. She initially began her studies in a different program, but found herself unfulfilled and doubting her choice of career path. “I often passed the early childhood education department while walking through the halls, and I would glance through the windows. The students looked like they were actually enjoying themselves. You could feel the positive atmosphere and the warmth and I knew that was where I belonged.” As soon as the next quarter began, Hefton started toward her goal – to graduate in Early Childhood Education.

Her strong instincts proved right and her path has taken her farther than she ever imagined.  Hefton, who once doubted her abilities, came back to Georgia a gold medal winner in the preschool teaching assistant division at the National Skills USA. This marks the fourth consecutive gold medal win for the program at Gwinnett Tech.

“I could not have made the strides I have if it were not for the encouragement of my family and instructors. This is an unbelievable program and the proof is within the walls of the department. I am honored to represent our college and encourage everybody to continue their education, no matter how old you may be or how complicated your life may have become. Technical skills are the foundation of our country and I am so fortunate to be a part of that.”

Linda enrolled in the dental assisting program and worked in the dental field for 11 years.  Because of the company down-sizing, Linda found herself in the unemployment office wondering what she was going to do with her life.  She thought about what she really likes to do and what brings joy into her life.  Linda loves to cook, and people really seem to enjoy anything she prepares, so culinary arts came to mind.  Linda enrolled in the culinary arts program at Atlanta Tech in October 2008.  She has excelled in her culinary skills.  Linda is also a college GOAL (Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership) award finalist.  Linda has plans to begin her own catering company upon completing her studies at Atlanta Tech.

Jacob Cohen
North Georgia Technical College
CNC (Computer Numerical Control) Turning Technology
National SkillsUSA – Bronze Medal Winner

Jacob Cohen, North Georgia Technical College student, took third place in CNC Turning Technology at the national SkillsUSA competition in Kansas City, Missouri, in June.

“Our congratulations to these students,” said Vice President of Instruction Vicki Nichols.  “And a big THANK YOU to the instructors of these students for going above and beyond to help these students succeed.”

“It was tough and there was a good bit of math in it,” said Cohen.  This was actually his second trip to Kansas City.  Last year I went for CNC Milling, so I was better prepared this time,” he smiled, adding, “I had a better idea of what I was getting myself into!”

The CNC Turning Technology contest is an upper level CNC programming and machining contest.  Each contestant received a part, drawing and material and was asked to write the program, set up the machine, and machine the part without the use of computer aided design (CAD) programs.

“My teachers have been great,” noted Cohen.  “Both Mr. Boyd and Mr. Gary taught me a lot and pulled me through.”

“Jacob and Jonathan had commendable performances and professional attitudes,” said NGTC Instructor Jim Haag who accompanied the students to Missouri.  “They are positive examples and leaders for SkillsUSA at NGTC.

Cohen will soon complete his associate’s degree in applied sciences with technical studies in machine tool.  He plans to attend Southern Polytechnic University and pursue a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering.

Cynthia Rowlands
Savannah Technical College
Technical Applications
National SkillsUSA – Bronze Medal Winner

For CIS/Cisco student Cynthia Rowlands, the June trip to Kansas City to compete in the national SkillsUSA competition was just different enough from 2008 to be fun.  Cynthia was representing Georgia for the second consecutive year in the technical applications competition, working with and competing against other college students in the use and application of technology to accomplish specific tasks. This year, she finished in third place, winning bronze, bettering her position by one from last year’s competition.

According to Cynthia, “They tested us individually on all of the functionalities of the Microsoft Office programs. Then, we worked in groups to use new and unfamiliar technology to communicate and accomplish our tasks.” One task involved working on a network server that ran a different platform from the more familiar windows servers.

On what she learned by competing, she quietly observes, “I guess I learned that I’m capable of a lot more than I think I am.”  Even though her program of study includes a focus on hardware, she appreciated the exposure and opportunity to learn and adapt to new software.  “I will be going into a business profession,” she says, “where I really need to know different software and be able to use them.”

Cynthia works in the campus bookstore and has helped out in the administrative and testing areas, during her time on campus.  She credits her instructor Anthony Adams, department head and instructor of computer information systems at the Liberty Campus with encouraging her competitive streak.
